History
St. Thomas was established in 1874 by the Bishop Gregg, first Bishop
of the Diocese of Texas. The current location was purchased in 1879,
giving Episcopalians the distinction of being the first to have
their own place of worship in Rockdale. ALCOA’s arrival in
Rockdale meant a population boom for the town and the church. The
frame exterior was covered in stone, the colored glass windows were
replaced with stained glass, and the Parish Hall was added to the
building.
At various times in St. Thomas’ history, the women of the
church organized to clear the church of debt, keep up appearances,
and minister to community needs. The Thrift Store organized by women’s
guild later developed into Rockdale Christian Services which today
is a broad-based social service agency supported by many of the
town’s congregations.
